How Houston Traffic Affects the Brakes on Your Silverado 1500: When to Service and Replace

Published on Aug 14, 2024 by Classic ELITE Chevy Creative Team

If you’ve ever driven around the bustling streets of Houston, Texas, or even tagged along as a passenger, then there’s a solid chance you know just how congested our roadways can become. While you might think the only things to worry about in the face of this frequent stop-and-go nature of Houston traffic is being late or wasting time, you should also consider how it affects your vehicle’s brakes. This is true whether you drive a small little sedan or a large, rugged pickup truck like the 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500. In an effort to highlight the importance of maintaining the health of your truck’s brake system, we’re going to give you the rundown on exactly how Houston traffic affects the brakes in your Silverado 1500, before diving into when you should be getting brake service and, ultimately, replacement.

Effects of Houston Traffic on Brakes

When you’re stuck in stop-and-go traffic like that we are frequently subjected to here in Houston, you’re forced to constantly tap on your brakes. Any time you apply pressure to the brakes, you’re wearing down your brake pads and rotors ever so slightly. So urban areas are already affecting your brakes more thanks to an increased number of stop lights and signs. Add on traffic, where you’re constantly accelerating and braking every few seconds, and the wear and tear becomes a bit excessive.

Another concern is those times when the traffic begins to go again so you start to accelerate, but then the traffic stops sooner than expected and you’re forced to quickly slam on your brakes. Happening once isn’t great but won’t be the end of the world, but when this happens frequently back-to-back, your braking system can become overheated, leading to more excessive wear and tear on the rotors and pads.

When your brake pads and rotors become worn down or warped, it leads to a decrease in the efficiency of braking overall, which means it’ll take longer for you to bring your vehicle to a stop. This can, obviously, lead to dangerous situations while on the road.

Signs of Brake Wear & Tear

There are several signs that something could be wrong with the brakes on your Chevy Silverado 1500. It’s important to be aware of these signs and keep an eye or ear out for when they are happening, as it means you need to – at the very least – get your brakes checked, if not serviced and/or replaced. Due to the harsh traffic conditions here in Houston, it’s even more important to stay vigilant while driving your Silverado. Here are a few of the most common signs that your brakes are beginning to get a little too worn and torn:

  • If the pedal feels different as you apply pressure, such as a spongy feeling or just that it’s softer than normal
  • If there are loud squealing or grinding noises while applying pressure to the brake pedal
  • If the brake pedal, steering wheel or the whole vehicle shakes or vibrates while applying pressure
  • If your Silverado 1500 pulls to the left or to the right while coming to a stop
  • If it takes longer for you to come to a complete stop than it normally would

When to Service & Replace

Your brakes should be one of the key areas to keep in mind when staying on top of your Silverado 1500’s regular maintenance. Whether or not you’ve noticed any of the aforementioned warning signs, you should be getting your brakes inspected by a certified technician at least once a year or every 12,000 miles, whichever happens to come first. If you have noticed one or more of those warning signs, it’s even more important to bring your vehicle in whether that much time or that many miles have passed or not.

Depending on what our technicians here at Classic ELITE Chevy find upon inspection, you could be looking at brake services – such as flushing your brake fluid, resurfacing your rotors, repairing your calipers – or an outright replacement of your pads, rotors or calipers. Be sure to schedule a service appointment if you think it’s time, or feel free to get in touch with us here at the dealership with any questions that you might have.
